Data recovery after reformat

I recently formatted my hard drive from NTFS to FAT32. I later realized, that I did not take a backup of the files. How do I get them back?

People usually format their hard drive, when they want to convert from FAT file systems to NTFS file system, or vice versa. After formatting, they may suddenly realize, that some of their precious data are lost, and try many methods to recover data from the formatted hard drive. This proves to be disastrous in most cases, leading to permanent erasure of data. Then, a question arises, as to how, we can recover data from a formatted hard drive?

Well, the answer to that question, is a good data recovery software. They help in recovering data from damaged partitions, even after reformat.

Recovery of lost data from complex data-loss situation like drive re-partitioning and re-formatting, is possible with REMO Recover (Windows) Pro Edition software. The software lets you recover all the data lost after formatting the drive, with utmost ease.

To recover data from a formatted hard drive, follow the simple steps given below:

Step 1: Launch the software by double clicking the desktop shortcut, or by selecting the icon from the Programs list in the Start Menu. The  Main window pops up, as shown in Figure a. Select the Recover-Advanced option.

Step 2: As soon as you click the Recover-Advanced button, a new window, to select the partition to be recovered, is displayed as shown in Figure b. Select the NTFS partition recovery option.

Step 3: As soon as you select the NTFS Partition Recovery option, a new window is displayed. Click the Wizard button, present on the upper left hand corner of the window. The Wizard is launched, as shown in Figure c.

Step 2: Select the Recover your Data option from the Wizard, and click on the Next button .

Step 3: As you click the Next button, a window is displayed, to select the physical drive from which you wish to recover the data, as shown in Figure d.

Select the physical drive and the processing mode to process the drive.

The software provides two processing modes.

  • Display default partitions- This option displays the partitions already present on the hard drive.
  • Search for lost partitions- This option displays the lost or corrupted partitions of that hard drive, which are not listed in the Display default partitions option.

Note: By default, the processing mode is set to Display default partition(s). If you do not find the partition(s) you are looking for, in the default list, then, you can search for the lost partitions, by clicking the Search for lost partition(s) radio button.

You can use the Quick Scan or the Thorough Scan method, for finding the lost partitions.  Quick Scan does a swift search for the lost partitions, and hence saves time. Thorough Scan does a detailed search, and therefore is more dependable.

Select the Thorough Scan method, and click the Next button.

On clicking the Next button, the software analyzes the selected drive, and lists all the found partitions in the partition table, as shown in Figure e.

Step 4: Select the partition for processing, and click the Finish button. The software processes the partition, and displays all the found files and folders in a tree structure, as shown in Figure f.

Step 5: You can also Preview the files, by double clicking on the file displayed in the tree structure, to see its preview, as shown in Figure g.

Step 6:The last step, is to save the recovered data onto a safe destination drive.To save a particular file, just select the file and click the Save button. If you want to recover whole tree structure that is formed, click on the root folder to mark  the whole data and click on the Save All button.

As soon as you click the Save All button, a window to select the destination drive, to store the recovered data is displayed, as shown in Figure h.

Select the destination drive, where you wish to save the data. Specify the file type you wish to ignore (file filter) during the saving process, and click on the OK button. As soon as you click the OK button, the software starts saving all the selected files and folders to the selected destination drive.

NOTE: Do not save the recovered data to the same location from where you are recovering the data, as this may lead to permanent data loss.
