A Complete Guide on PSD Files

Written by John Harris, Updated on October 06, 2023

A PSD file is a layered image file used in Adobe Photoshop. PSD, which stands for Photoshop Document, is the default format Photoshop uses to save and edit the image. PSD is a proprietary file that allows the user to work with the image's individual layers even after the file has been saved.

PSD files are widely used by graphic designers, web designers, photographers, and other creative professionals. They also store and exchange image files between different software applications.

PSD is a widely accepted format that supports all the available image types, such as Bitmap, RGB, Indexed Color, CMYK, Lab, multichannel, and grayscale. PSD can save images in the form of layers (like image, text, shape, etc.), i.e., the image may be opened with Adobe Photoshop anytime, and each individual layer or even a part of it can be edited.

Once the image is edited and saved, Photoshop allows the user to flatten the layers and convert that flat image into a .jpg, .gif, .tiff, or any other non-proprietary file format to share it. Once a PSD image has been flattened after conversion, it cannot be returned to its original state, i.e., the PSD file and the user can no longer work with the image's layers. Therefore, always save the PSD file and not overwrite it during conversion.

File Extension: .psd Mime type: image/photoshop, image/x-photoshop, image/psd, application/photoshop, application/psd

The Photoshop file format PSD is divided into five parts: file Header (specifies the image size and color channels), Color Mode data image resources, Layer and Mask information, and Image data. The File header has a fixed length, whereas the other four parts have variable lengths.

Benefits of PSD

PSD can even be adjusted and edited independently to achieve better effects. Special blending effects can also be achieved with the help of the transparency mask of Photoshop. Due to these features, PSD has become a very useful format for further adjustment and manipulation of an image in desktop publishing. Even the designers who work with other image file types like TIFF, PNG, GIFF, etc., will first work on their images in Photoshop and then transfer them to their preferred file types.

The maximum size of a PSD file is 30,000x30,000 pixels and can be saved with 16 bits per color channel.

Applications that open PSD files: Adobe Photoshop and Photoshop Elements on Windows and Adobe Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, and Apple Preview on Mac OS.
