External hard drive data loss scenarios

Accidentally formatted / re-formatted external hard drive – The external hard drive is primarily a hard drive, with the only difference that it uses an USB casing or a FireWire interface which is absent in a regular hard drive. As the external hard disk also contains different partitions, there are chances that you might accidentally format or re-format the external hard drive resulting in loss of data.

Loss of data due to incomplete transfer process – As the external hard drive is primarily used to take backup, or to store large files, there is a lot of data transfer that is involved. Power surge or improper shutdown of the computer during transfer of data may lead to data loss from the external HDD.

Re-partitioning the external hard drive leading to data loss – At times when there is a need to re-partition the external hard drive, there are chances that you might re-partition the external hard drive without taking the necessary backup leading to data loss.

Overwriting data on the external hard drive – External hard drive plays an important role in backup of data and many users saves a disk image of their hard drive on their external hard drive. However, there are instances when the user ends up saving a disk image twice on the external hard drive, but midway through the process realizes the mistake and halts the process, leading to partial overwriting. External hard drive restoration is possible in such circumstances
