Microsoft Outlook is the world’s most popular e-mail client. Outlook manages all your e-mails, and in addition to that, it also manages your Calendar, Contacts, Journals, Notes etc. It stores all this data,  in a  Personal Storage Folder, better known as a .pst file.

What exactly happens when we delete emails in a .pst file?

The .pst file stores indexes, that point to each outlook item. When the Deleted Items folder is emptied, Outlook deletes the items listings but not the actual item. In reality, the item still exists in the pst file, but is made inaccessible due to deletion of the listing.Therefore, the space occupied by the item is now marked as free space.

It is  only when you “compact” your .pst file, that the Outlook item is permanently erased, and the empty space is overwritten by new data.Once the emails get permanently deleted due to compacting, it would be impossible to recover the deleted emails using a recovery software.It is therefore highly recommended,that you do not compact the pst file, as this would render the data irrecoverable.

Are deleted emails recoverable?

Yes, the deleted emails can be easily recovered from a .pst file with the help of  REMO Recover Outlook (pst) software. Follow these simple steps, to recover your deleted emails from a .pst file:

1. Once installed, run the application either by clicking the desktop shortcut, or by selecting the icon from the Programs list in the Start menu.The Main window pops up, as shown in Figure a.

2. Click on the button, or select the  Select .pst file option from the File menu.
3. As you click on the Select .pst file option, a new window is displayed, as shown in Figure b.It displays all the .pst files present on your PC. Select the required .pst file, and click the Open button.

4. Once you select the .pst file that is to be repaired, click on the button. As soon as you click on the Recover & Save button, a window to select the scan type and the destination drive to save the repaired .pst file is displayed, as shown in Figure c.

   REMO Recover Outlook (pst) software provides two scan types:

   • Normal Scan: Normal Scan is usually recommended.
   • Smart Scan: Smart Scan should be performed only when Normal scan fails to recover the emails you are looking for. Smart Scan uses an advanced technique, for locating deleted/lost emails.It rigorously searches the selected .pst file for lost / deleted e-mails. During this search, if the program finds an attachment whose parent information is missing, then it will be displayed in a new folder by name “Orphaned Attachment”.
5. Select Normal Scan, and click on the Browse button to select a destination drive, to restore your repaired .pst file, and click on the OK button.

Once you click the OK button, the application locates the e-mails in the selected .pst file, and restores them into a new .pst file in the selected destination drive.The recovered .pst file, is similar to the original .pst file that was deleted.

You can now import the new .pst file to Microsoft Outlook, and access your e-mails as before.

You can also preview the recovered e-mails by clicking on the e-mails, loaded in the Main window of the application. The software displays the preview of the selected .pst file in the Main window of the application.
