Microsoft Outlook is the world’s most popular e-mail client. Outlook manages all your e-mails, and in addition to that, it also manages your Calendar, Contacts, Journals, Notes etc. It stores all this data,  in a  Personal Storage Folder, better known as a .pst file.

What exactly happens when we delete emails in a .pst file?

The .pst file stores indexes, that point to each outlook item. When the Deleted Items folder is emptied, Outlook deletes the items listings but not the actual item. In reality, the item still exists in the pst file, but is made inaccessible due to deletion of the listing.Therefore, the space occupied by the item is now marked as free space.

It is  only when you “compact” your .pst file, that the Outlook item is permanently erased, and the empty space is overwritten by new data.Once the emails get permanently deleted due to compacting, it would be impossible to recover the deleted emails using a recovery software.It is therefore highly recommended,that you do not compact the pst file, as this would render the data irrecoverable.

Are deleted emails recoverable?

Follow these simple steps, to recover your deleted emails from a .pst file:

Step 1: Download and install free trial version of Remo Repair Outlook PST to the computer

Step 2: Launch the application by using the Start Menu>Program Files, or by double-clicking the shortcut icon on the desktop. The main window is displayed as shown in Fig 1

Step 3: The main screen displays three different options namely "Open PST File", "Find PST File" and "Select Outlook Profile" from the main screen as shown in Fig 1

• Select the "Open PST File" option if you know the location of  your PST file
• If you are not sure about the location of your PST file then select "Find PST File" option
• To recover PST file based on the Outlook profile select "Select Outlook Profile" option

Step 4: Based on the option that has been selected in the previous step

• Open PST File:  After you have selected this option, click on the "Browse" button to select the particular PST file, which you need to repair as shown in Fig 2
• Find PST File: Once you select this option, then choose the logical drive on which you need to find the PST file that has to be repaired as shown in Fig 3
• Select Outlook Profile: If you select this option, all the PST files associated with their respective Outlook profiles will be displayed as shown in Fig 4

Step 5: After selecting the PST file that is to be repaired click "Next"

Step 6: Select the "Normal Scan" option and the destination location where you want to save the recovered PST file as shown in Fig 5

Step 7: Click on "Repair" button to begin the scanning process as shown in Fig 5

Step 8: Once scanning process has been completed, you can view recovered emails and other Outlook data as shown in Fig 6

Step 9: If you are satisfied with the recovery results, you can activate the full version the software

Step 10: Once the software is activated you have to rescan the PST file to recover deleted emails
