Files deleted from Recycle bin: Files get permanently deleted when they are emptied from Windows Recycle Bin or when the file bypasses the Recycle Bin due to its large size

Accidental formatting: Human errors are most common reasons that lead to accidental formatting of the hard drive

Partitioning errors: While creating a new partition using third party partitioning utilities you may encounter partitioning errors resulting in data loss

Deleted / lost partitions: Deleting a partition using in-built system utility or by third party utility could lead to data loss from partitions

Partition corruption: Corruption caused when you are trying to make a dual boot or multi boot operating system may lead lo loss of significant files

Defrag failure: Windows disk defragmentation may fail when you run into errors resulting in loss of files

Chkdsk: When Windows executes chkdsk on its own it may delete important files by creating junk entries out of critical data

Files lost while anti-virus scanning: Viruses are another common cause for data loss from hard drive. Files may be lost while anti-virus scanning or malfunction of third party utilities.

Improper system shutdown: Improper shutdown could result in corruption of system files and causes data loss
