Undelete pictures from SD card

I was messing around with my camera and accidentally pressed the format button. All my pictures are gone. Can I recover pictures even after format? I deleted the pictures, but I guess the data is not lost completely? Is it possible to undelete photos from my formatted SD Card?

SD cards are very much similar to your regular hard drive, and hence they are as likely to be corrupted, damaged or lose data, as you would with the  regular hard drive. If you have intentionally, or by mistake formatted your SD card, your deleted pictures will still exist on your memory card, and can be retrieved using a recovery software.

What happens when you format a SD card, or delete pictures from it?

Image files occupy a given disk space on the SD card. When you format the card, the disk space on which the images are stored is not deleted, instead they are now marked as free space, so that new data can written onto that disk space. This is why the deleted images will no longer be accessible by your camera, even though the image is still present on your SD card.

REMO Recover (Windows) Media Edition software, can easily locate those deleted/lost pictures and recover them completely. It can recover data from SD, xD, MMC and other flash memory storage devices. The software lets you recover images in basic formats like, jpg, jpeg, tif, tiff, png etc., and RAW photos in special formats like, CRW, CR2, SR2, SRF, etc. The software also lets you recover music and video files in various formats.
