What is a device driver?
In system, a device driver is a computer program that operates and manages a specific type of devices that is plug into a system. A driver generally communicates with the device through the system bus or communication subsystem to which the hardware connects. Typically, when a calling program call a routine in the driver, the driver issues commands to the device. Once the device sends information return to the driver, it may invoke routines in the proper calling function. Drivers are hardware-dependent and operating-system-specific.
Why do we need device driver?
A device drivers provides a set of rules and commands that is needed by your operating system to know how to initiate communication with a particular piece of hardware components such as printer, scanner, USB peripherals and even video, graphics and sound cards on your system.
