Blu-ray Disc

Blu-ray disc is also belongs to the family of digital optical disc data storage format, came into market to replace existing DVD format. Its size is almost similar as DVD and CD i.e. 120 mm in diameter and 1.2 m thick and its capacity compared to DVD is more i.e. 25 GB per layer, and other discs are available in size of 50, 100 and 125 GB.

In DVD, red laser is used to read disc but in Blu-ray disc, blue laser is used to read data stored on it and it allows data to be stored in huge abundant compared to DVD. Majorly, these Blu-ray disc are used as medium for storing video films and it is basically associated with multimedia formats which allows audio and video to be stored with higher definition. Blu-ray Disc Assocaition, a group representing makers of consumer electronics, motion picture and computer hardware were developed blu-ray disc format.  Its first prototype was announced publically in October 2000 and released a first prototype player in April 2003 in Japan.

Advantages:

  • Have more storage capacity compared to DVD
  • Allows copying disc for limited number of times to prevent piracy
  • Provides high picture quality that has 1080p high definition resolution
  • Backwards compatibility

Disadvantages:

  • Cost is very high
  • Requires blu-ray disc players to read data stored on it
  • High Definition capacity is not a substantial amount even though storage space is great
  • Easily vulnerable to scratches soon

Blu-ray disc formats planned

  • BD-ROM: read only format for distribution of HD movies, games, songs etc.
  • BD-R: recordable format for HD video recording and PC data storage
  • BD-RE: rewritable format for HD video recording and PC data storage

There is also plan for a BD/DVD hybrid format, which combines Blu-ray  and DVD on the sane disc so that it can be played in both blu-ray players and DVD players.
