Data Recovery Tips

As the name implies, data recovery is a process of recovering data from the storage devices. The necessity for data recovery arises when the storage devices fail or are corrupted, thereby making data inaccessible from the devices. Hard disk drives, USB flash drives, CDs, DVDs, RAID servers, magnetic tapes etc., are some of the data storage devices. Data recovery would arise when the storage devices corrupt due to disk crash, virus attack, power surges, physical shocks etc.

Below are the tips to recover data from storage devices:

  • If odd noises like clicking sounds emanate from hard drive, stop the power supply to the computer immediately and contact experts in complex cases to avoid further damage to the drive
  • Backup the data on a good storage device like, external hard disk drive, tape drives etc
  • Verify the data before backing up (if it is critical and in good condition)
  • Avoid computer from extreme temperatures and high humidity
  • Never run SCANDISK or chkdsk, in these scenarios
  • Never format the system, in these scenarios
  • Do not try to solve the problem on your own, it may worsen the situation more
  • Contact only reliable enterprise, who are expertise and have good clean rooms
  • Do not assume that data cannot be recovered
  • Never open the hard drive
  • Packaging cautiously while shipping is important
  • Never write or save anything on the drive containing critical data
  • Never use the system till the data is recovered
  • Never browse web, because browser saves cache files on disk, which can overwrite the files on hard disk
  • Do not shake the hard disk
  • Jot down all the conditions and scenarios you came across during the hard disk crash and data loss event and explain it to the expertise clearly

In case of external devices, plug it into other system and check if it is working fine. If it is fine, then the problem is in your system not the device. If the problem persists, then follow the above steps.

Preventing Data Loss

“Prevention is better than cure”

“A stitch in time saves the nine”

Hence, below are few tips to avoid being a victim of data loss:

  • Use good anti-virus and malware software
  • Thoroughly scan for viruses for all the documents before downloading or transferring it into your system
  • Provide anti-static environment to the system
  • Upgrade the system only if you have backup of previous version
  • Avoid physical shocks to the system
  • Use inverters or UPS (uninterruptible power supply) and voltage guards to avoid power surges
  • Prevent from excessive heat or fire
  • Run chkdsk regularly to repair indexes of the file system
  • Proper booting and shut down of the system
  • Provide low temperature and low humidity environment
  • Opt for redundant backing up of data
  • The backed up data should be verified regularly, particularly critical data
  • Preferably, opt for offsite-location to backup data
