Digital Camera

Digital cameras are the devices that capture videos and images with the help of image sensors. This has made the picture quality controllable and better than ever. Its stylish features and instant processing power have led to its popularity. Many compact digital cameras can record sound and moving video and even still photographs.

You can save files in different file formats. Transferring files is easy on digital cameras as these will have connectivity of Bluetooth, data cable or internet. These cameras also enable sharing files on your social sites instantly. Digital cameras have variable modes of capturing files and hence providing number of options to select from. There are different types of digital cameras, you can choose according to your requirements. Few of these types are compact, waterproof, interchangeable lens, line-scan, and bridge cameras and so on.

Categories of Digital cameras

There are two categories of digital cameras available now, they are:

Non-SLR digital cameras (compact digital cameras): It is the digital equivalent a “Point and Shot” film cameras as the lens is built into the camera and can’t be removed. Also, these types of cameras doesn’t allow you to see what the see what the lens is seeing i.e. the viewfinder does NOT the user to look through the lens.

Digital SLR cameras: A digital SLR camera is the digital version of the now ancient standard 35mm camera. You can easily remove the lens from a digital SLR camera and, when you look through the viewfinder of the SLR camera, photographer can see what the lens of the camera actually sees.

Features of digital cameras

Compression: It is a technique to shrinks the file size of a photo. If the file size is large then it requires huge amounts of memory. Compression technique used in the digital cameras reduces the file size and allowing you to store more, save, download, and email photos at a faster rate.

Power Source: Digital cameras use batteries as the power source. They use either a rechargeable battery pack or traditional batteries, usually 2 - 4 double A. Some have an AC adapter as well.

Optical Zoom:There are 2 types of zoom lenses, digital and optical. Digital zoom simply enlarges the picture without adding any clarity of detail. Optical zoom will add detail and sharpness. The larger the lens (2x, 3x, which is standard, 4x, etc.) the more picture taking flexibility you have.

LCD View:LCD (Liquid Crystal Displays) allows the digital cameras view the image before capturing the photo. The LCD is a screen that shows the user what the camera has within view of the picture frame.

Burst Mode: This allows you to take multiple shots in rapid succession for example, pro's motor drive. However, lag time between taking each image varies widely.

Macro Mode: To capture detailed close-ups, such as an insect on a flower, macro mode allows you to focus within inches of your subject. How close you can shoot depends on the camera you use.

Advantages of Digital cameras over Film cameras

Digital cameras can actually perform better and do tasks that Film cameras can’t do:

  • Digital cameras can instantly display images on a screen immediately after they are recorded
  • They can Store thousands of images on a single small memory device
  • One can easily record video with sound, and allow you to even delete the images to free storage space
  • Some of these digital camera brands can crop pictures and perform other elementary image editing

However, the optical system works same as in film cameras, typically using a lens with a variable diaphragm to focus light onto an image pickup device. The diaphragm and shutter admit the correct amount of light to the imager, just as with film but the image pickup device will be electronic rather than chemical.
