Firmware

Firmware is a set of instructions programmed on hardware; it is a combination of both software and hardware. Firmwares provide instructions on how the device should work and operate but unlike normal software; firmwares cannot be changed or deleted. These programs work even if its hardware device is on or off, usually firmware’s are stored in non-volatile memory devices such as ROM, EPROM or flash memory. Some of the example for devices containing firmware’s are CD, DVD drive, digital watches, mobile phones, cameras, traffic lights, home appliances, network card, scanner and etc.

Firmware Update:

A firmware update is a software program that is used to update the firmware to its latest version, for instance user can download firmware update for their hard drives and video cards in order to make them compatible with latest operating systems. CD and DVD manufacturers often make firmware updates, which allow these drives to read / write faster. Often firmware updates are released to make devices work more efficient or to fix issues or bugs.

Keeping your firmware updated is often not necessary; however it is a good idea. But it is suggested; that once you start firmware update you should allow it to get completed. Because most hardware devices won’t work if their firmware is not recognized.
