JPEG

JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group, is a standard algorithm for compressing an image file or a digital image. The JPEG standard refers to both the technique of compressing an image into a stream of bytes and then decompressing it close to its original form. JPEG images are characterized by high colorful resolution and are the most popular image file types used for storing and transmitting the photographs on internet.

JPEG is a 24-bit file that supports 16.7 million colors and is a lossy file compression technique to compress the images. In this technique some amount of information will be removed to assist in decreasing the file size. However, it allows the user to adjust the ratio of compression based on the desired quality or file size.  For example, user can save the image in high-quality for photo-printing, in medium quality in case of Web and low quality while attaching the photos to emails. Here, the low quality one provides the smallest file size to ensure fastest transmission.

JPEG is an Image Compression Algorithm, which is designed for compressing full-color or grayscale digital images of natural, real-world scenes. It specifies only how an image is transformed into a stream of bytes, but not how those bytes will be encapsulated in any particular storage medium. Actually, JPEG provides 10:1 compression with little traceable loss in image quality and is the file type that is most often produced by digital photography or while capturing the computer screenshots.

Advantages of JPEG

No editing required for printing: One can easily print the JPEG images without converting the file to another format. One can print these JPEG files directly from your camera without editing the pictures

Widely used image File Format: JPEG supports most of the image editor and web browser on the market. It is also supported by every digital camera, and any video camcorder that can also take pictures. The JPEG format is one of the best universal image formats to choose.

Smaller file size: JPEG doesn’t take up much storage space and thus, ensures speedy transfer over internet. Also, even the digital cameras could write the JPEG images to the memory card quicker than those RAW images.

Limitations

  • It does not work very well on non-realistic images, such as cartoons or line drawings, graphs, charts and other textual or iconic graphics since its compression method performs badly on these types of images
  • It cannot handle compression of black and white images or moving pictures
  • It provides decent image quality at great reduction, hence the final image may be as small as 2 percent of the original, more the image is compressed, the more the loss will be
