Picasa is a free online photo-sharing tool provided by Google. As download Picasa tool on your system, it automatically starts scanning pictures located in hard drive including other storage devices connected to system and moves them to Picasa. Later, using this tool, you can edit pictures, compile and organize albums and even share pictures online. Moreover, this tool provides 1 GB of free space to store their photos online and you can print hard copies. History of Picasa

In fact, Picasa tool is created by a company named Lifescape in 2002 and later owned by Google since 2004. The name Picasa was came from Spanish painter, Pablo Picasa, the phrase mi casa and “pic” for pictures. In the year 2004 July, Google acquired Picasa from its original author and started offering free version.

Current version of Picasa is 3.9, which supports Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and included Google+ integration for udders for that service.  Linux users can use of other applications to upload pictures to Picasa Web Albums, including Shotwell and Digikam.  Beta version for Mac had released by Google on 5th June 2009 , including plug-in for iPhoto to upload to the Picasa web Albums hosting service.

In Picasa, you can easily organize photos using file tracking and importing features, including tags, facial recognition, and collections for further sorting. It offers many several basic functions to edit photo, red eye reduction, color enhancement and cropping. You can also perform other actions such as slide show, printing, image timelines.  In addition, it provides option to reduce size of the file, adding text to file for e-mailing or printing.


Picasa uses picasa.ini files in order to keep track of keywords for each picture. Moreover, for JPEG files only, Picasa attaches IPTC information Interchange Model keyword data. The keyword data attached to JPEG files can be read by other image library applications like Adobe Brigade, DigiKam Aperture and iPhoto.


In Picasa tool, a search tool bar can help you to browse specific file and it is visible while viewing the library. In addition, searches are live, so that displayed items are sorted as you text. This search bar helps to search captions, folder names, file names and other metadata.
