Windows Virtual PC

Windows Virtual PC is a virtualization application program for Microsoft Windows. In July 2006, Microsoft released the Windows version as a free product but newest release of this application does not support Windows versions earlier than Windows 7. However, older versions support a wider range of guest and host operating system. Windows Virtual PC virtualizes standard system and its connected hardware components. The list of supported operating systems can run inside Virtual PC including Linux but it is not officially supported.

Windows Virtual PC undergone beta testing on April 30, 2009 and was released after Windows 7. This version supports only Windows 7 host operating system and required hardware virtualization support. However, after release of updated version of Microsoft Virtual PC allows it to run on system without hardware support. In addition, Windows Virtual PC is available free of cost for certain editions of Windows 7.

  • USB support and redirection:  You can connect USB peripherals such as digital cameras, flash drives, and print from the guest to host OS printer
  • Faultless program publishing and launching: run Windows XP Mode applications directly from the Windows 7 system
  • Support for multithreading: concurrently you can run multiple virtual machines

  • Integration with Windows Explorer: manage all VMs from a single Explorer folder

 System requirements

  • Computer running Windows 7 (all editions except Starter)
  • Requires more than 1 GHz processor (32- or 64-bit)
  • 2 GB memory required
  • Requires 15 GB of hard disk space per virtual Windows environment
