Install Windows 10 Apps Onto an SD Card or Other Drives

It all started with Windows 10 November Update! Yes, you can now download and install the apps to an SD card or other external storage devices. Making it easy for the users of small storage capacity devices like tablets and other devices. All you have to do is to insert the SD card and install all the apps you want.

Inserting an SD Card

First, get an SD card that suits your device. Different devices come with different SD card slots. If the SD card doesn’t fit into the slot, you might consider using a smaller on like Micro SD card. Often Micro SD cards are available with adapters, which works as a larger SD card as well.

When buying an SD card, it’s not just the price that matters. It’s about the storage class. You don’t want to buy the slowest SD card for app installation and end up slowing down the app itself. So be careful while choosing an SD card.

How to Install Apps to an SD Card?

Insert an SD card, memory card or other storage device and then open ‘Settings’ app from the start menu.

Now, in the Settings program, go to System and then Storage. You’ll see the SD card you inserted in the list of storage drives.

Here, scroll down a little, under Save locations tab, hit “New apps will save to” option. Choose the memory card or any other storage drive and click Apply.

You have another option here – you can choose a drive to save new documents, photos, music or movies.

You have now set the SD card as a chosen location to install apps. Go to Windows Store and install the apps like how you would do normally. Windows will now install the apps on an SD Card or other chosen drive saving the space on your device’s internal drive. Now you can install all the apps which otherwise wouldn’t have been possible on the small storage devices – which includes cheaper Windows 10 laptops or tablets.

Move Already Installed Apps to SD Card

Enabling the above settings will allow you to store the apps you install in the future. But the apps which you already installed will not be moved to the SD card. There are different unsupportive methods to move the installed apps, but that won’t serve the good purpose in the long run. For this, Microsoft recommends a simple solution – uninstall the apps and this, in turn, will be removed automatically from the internal storage. And then, install the apps again. Now, Windows 10 will store these apps on the SD card.

Let’s see how to uninstall the apps. You have to find the apps from the Start Screen or Start Menu and long press it or right-click the app and select Uninstall. Later you can search for that app in Windows store and downloaded it. The app will be installed on the SD card.

What If The SD Card Is Removed?

If you remove your SD card, memory card or other storage devices, the apps will not work. Even if click the tile to run the app, you’ll see nothing. If you want the apps to work normally again, just insert the SD card or plug in the storage device to your computer. Everything will work just fine.

Undo The Settings

If you, in future decided not to use the external device to store the apps, in the Settings program, go to System and then Storage, choose ‘This PC’ for “New apps will save to”. This will store the new apps downloaded in the internal drive. However, the apps that are already stored in the SD card won’t be moved to the internal storage. To migrate those apps, you have to follow the uninstall and reinstall process.

Conclusion

Installing, uninstalling might be an easy process, but in the process of plugging and unplugging the SD card or memory card, there might be chances of corruption of card. In such a case, you can make use of reliable software for data recovery from corrupt memory card or SD card. This will help you in restoring the data. They even come with technical support assistance for any help.
