4 Realistic Data Storage Options for Enterprises to Solve the Storage Crisis

As per April 2014 IDC report the amount of data is doubling in size every two years, and by 2020 the data we create or copy will reach 44 zettabytes, or 44 trillion gigabytes. And, if you zoom out of the picture, you`ll find that our digital universe is growing 40% a year into the next decade.

Another report by Cisco reveals that global mobile traffic reached 3.7 exabytes per month by the end of 2015 that is a whopping 74% growth compare to 2.1 exabytes at the end of 2014.

Cellphone and Tablets have also been serving as a primary source of tremendous growth of data big bang. There are already more than 6 billion cellphones in the world, generating more than a billion gigabytes of data every month. And with the latest Buzzword “IoT”, as more devices continue to connect with each other, sensors on everything from home appliances to rockets are only going to increase data output.

The only way to survive in this data deluge is to find more ways for data storage. That’s why artificial intelligence and machine learning have become major area of research in recent years. While the steps in learning from data to find patterns that can help to manage the data and significant advances in storing data on plants DNA, still sounds futuristic and sci-fi. For now, the realistic data storage options are the need of hour.

Here are four realistic solutions that can help to survive from the data flood:

Cold Storage Archiving

Cold storage is new technique to retain the inactive data that organization rarely access by keeping on slower and less expensive disks, so that the available space on faster disks are freed up for information that does need to access routinely.

Data retrieval time can be significantly lower in cold storage than systems that are designed for active data usage. Amazon Glacier and Google Cloud Storage Nearline, currently offers cloud services that cater to cold storage.  Facebook has also heated the cold storage by giving attention to Blu-ray cold storage system through Open Compute Project.

The Hybrid Cloud

Hybrid cloud is a term coined to represent combination of public cloud provider and a private cloud platform that is designed for use by a single organization. Both infrastructures operate independently and communicate over an encrypted connection, using technology that allows portability of data and applications.

The direct benefits of going hybrid is reduced access time and latency. Having a hybrid infrastructure onsite makes it accessible easily- not pushed through the public internet.  Enterprises choose hybrid platform because of its scalability and cost effectiveness along with the option keeping data out of the public cloud.

The FlashBlade

Flash data storage is widely used medium for home user. This uses semiconductor to store and access information. As flash prices continue to fall down and data deluge, flash could be a viable option for medium sized enterprises for their storage need.

Pure Storage a data storage provider aims to level up the flash storage solutions to make it real contender for large companies in the data storage war. They adopt all flash approach to response data deluge. Their notable product includes FlashBlade, a refrigerator-sized box designed to store petabytes of unstructured data. Currently this can store 16 petabytes of data which is 5 times as much data traditional storage devices can store, and co-founder John Hayes promises that amount can be doubled by 2017.

Intelligent Software Designed Storage (I-SDS)

In the digital world data is the new king. Everything from big data to Analytics to Artificial Intelligence, data driven decisions are driving our economy up. This glut of data has kept a tight rein for enterprises who are still dependent on traditional storage system.

This is why I-SDS came into the game. I-SDS replaces the hardware stacks with storage model that is managed and automated by intelligent software. We are now shifting from computational environment to one that behaves more like how our brain compute massive amount of data. Here the key is to combine intelligent abstraction and intelligent Analytics with full API based interfaces to maintain corporate integrity and control its precious data.

Remo Software Take

Looking at the rate of data swamp, it is obvious that we need more realistic ways to manage and store the data. Moreover, it is an extreme necessity that enterprises recognize inactive data dump and uses effective technology to store them in alternative storing points for longer periods, so that these freed up space can be used for data which is readily accessible. It`ll be interesting to see which of these technologies will be in the line with the wishes of enterprises.

As always comment below and let us know your take on new ways to survive in this storage deluge!
