Outlook won’t open

That moment where you encounter an error indicating that your Outlook will not open, will be very distressing right? Of course yes, because Outlook is the one that store all your important mails containing vital information. Moreover nowadays, it has become more interactive by providing attributes like reminders, appointments, tasks, calendar and more importantly your contacts.  This is why your Outlook becomes very important. If your Outlook won’t start due to any reasons, you will lose all your mails, reminders, and notes etc. that were saved in your Outlook.

Incompatible Versions

Make sure that the Outlook version you have installed is compatible with the Windows version you are using. If for some reason you've installed an incorrect version of the program, it won't open and doesn’t give you access to your mail.

Administrator Privileges

Sometimes your Outlook might not open if the system doesn't have the rights to run Outlook. In order to adjust the settings, right-click on Outlook tile and click the “Run as Administrator” option at the bottom of the screen. This will give your Outlook program the rights to run the Outlook.

Other Programs

In some situations, other programs running on your Windows systems might stop your Outlook from opening.  Especially, if you are running anti-virus program. If this is the case, then just stop running all the other programs that are being executed. If is your anti-virus program; try opening the Outlook after the scan is complete. In case the virus scan finds an issue, quarantine it or remove it, depending on what your anti-virus software recommends.

Outdated Outlook

If Outlook isn't opening, you may be missing necessary updates from Microsoft i.e. you are using the outdated Outlook. Just open the Control Panel and look in System and Security to find the update options. Now, run the update to determine whether everything you need is downloaded and installed. Once it is completed, restart your computer and attempt to open Microsoft Outlook again. If it is still not working, then remove the program and reinstall it.

Open Outlook in Safe Mode

If your Outlook worked correctly the last time and nothing has been changed about your account configuration, then just try opening it in Safe Mode. This will prevent some or all add-ins and several settings files from being loaded and even turn off your Reading Pane.

In order to start your Outlook in Safe Mode you have to start Outlook with the “safe” switch option:

  • Windows XP: Start-> Run; outlook.exe /safe
  • Windows Vista and Windows 7: Start-> type; outlook.exe /safe
  • Windows 8: Start Screen-> type; outlook.exe /safe

Start Outlook in resetnavpane window

If you encounter the error message stating “Cannot open the Outlook window” while trying to start Outlook, this indicates that your Navigation Pane setting is corrupt. To fix this issue just start your Outlook with the resetnavpane switch:

  •  Windows XP: Start-> Run; outlook.exe /resetnavpane
  • Windows Vista and Windows 7: Start-> type; outlook.exe /resetnavpane
  • Windows 8: Start Screen-> type; outlook.exe /resetnavpane

Use scanpst.exe

PST file is a special file that stores all your emails and other Outlook related attributes in it. If this file is corrupt due to any unknown reasons you will not be able to open your Outlook. If none of the above solutions help you out, then just try using the scanpst.exe tool.

Scanpst.exe is a default inbox repair tool provided by Outlook to fix your PST file. Use scanpst.exe to scan your pst-file for errors and fix them automatically.
