How to Import MBOX Into Outlook?

MBOX is a popular email storage format used by Thunderbird, Apple Mail, eml, Gmail, and more. To import MBOX to Outlook, since Microsoft Outlook natively supports only PST files. In this guide, we will explore three effective and proven methods to import MBOX emails into Outlook.

Method 1: Free MBOX to Outlook Migration using Thunderbird

This is the most popular free method that you can use. Here, we will be using Thunderbird to export an MBOX file, which we will then transfer over to a Gmail ID. After the MBOX gets synced with your Gmail account, we will proceed to add it to Outlook as a new account.

Step 1: Install Mozilla Thunderbird

Download and install the latest Thunderbird from https://www.thunderbird.net/

Step 2: Import MBOX into Thunderbird

1. Open Thunderbird.

2. Install the free add-on ImportExportTools NG:

  • Go to Tools, select Add-ons and Themes.
  • Search for ImportExportTools NG Install and restart Thunderbird.

3. Right-click on Local Folders, select ImportExportTools NG and click on Import mbox file.

4. Choose your .mbox file and import with options.

Your emails will now appear in Thunderbird.

Step 3: Set Up IMAP Account in Both Thunderbird and Outlook

The trick is to use an IMAP account (Gmail works perfectly) as a temporary bridge.

1. Create a new Gmail account (or use an existing one) just for migration if you want.

2. In Thunderbird:

  • Go to Account Settings, click on Account Actions, and select Add Mail Account.
  • Enter your Gmail address and password. Allow Thunderbird to configure it automatically.

Drag and drop all the emails from Local Folders to your Gmail folders inside Thunderbird. This uploads them to Gmail’s server.

3. In Microsoft Outlook:

  • Click on File.
  • Click on Account Settings and Select Account Settings.

4. Click on new… and select Add Account.

5. Enter the same Gmail address. Let Outlook configure it via IMAP.

6. Once added, all emails you uploaded from Thunderbird will appear in Outlook.

Done! You now have all your MBOX emails inside Outlook, fully searchable and organized.

Pro Tip: If you only have a few emails to transfer, you could transfer them individually by importing your mails as .eml Files into Outlook.

Method 2: Convert MBOX to PST using a Professional Converter

A professional MBOX to PST Converter would be the most effective way to import your MBOX into Outlook. There are several tools available on the net. If you plan to export emails from Outlook using this method, make sure to do thorough research and select a trusted brand.

Method 3: Transfer MBOX Emails to Outlook via EML

Note: This method is suitable for smaller files

  • Use Thunderbird + ImportExportTools NG to export your MBOX messages as individual .eml files.
  • In Outlook, Right-click on the left pane and create a new folder.
  • Simply drag the .eml files from Windows Explorer into that Outlook folder.

  • If your MBOX file has no extension or is named “Inbox”, just rename it to Inbox.mbox .
  • Always work on a copy of your original MBOX file.
