We know that excessive use of anything can lead to an eventual wear and tear. Same applies in the case of your hard drives. Depending on how you use it, the hard drives can be used for a certain period of time. It is your responsibility to look after them with care or regret later, after suffering data loss.
With that in mind, let us explore some methods you can employ to ensure your hard drives do not fail.
- Run chkdsk
Windows chkdsk feature can overcome such problems as bad sectors, directory errors which can cause an unbootable drive.
To run your chkdsk command using Command Prompt,
- Press Windows key +X and select Command Prompt (Admin).
- Now type chkdsk /r /f and hit Enter.
- A prompt appears asking you to schedule a scan of your hard drive once system restarts. Type Y and hit Enter.
- Defragment your drive
Defragmentation reduces the amount of fragmentation by storing your files into the smallest number of contiguous regions known as fragments.
You can set defrag process on your PC on a weekly basis. This keeps file structure more compact as read heads are used less frequently.
- Tighten the screws
Mounting screws, that secure your hard drive to the PC chassis can cause vibrations. The platters of your hard disk can be damaged due to these vibrations. If you hear any vibrations, tighten the screws that connect your hard drive to the mounting platform.
- Error checking hard drives
Start your hard disk scan using File Explorer.
Click Start -> File Explorer -> This PC.
Now right-click on the system drive where your Windows 10 Operating system is installed, and click Properties.
Select Tools -> Check.
The tool now scans for errors. The time needed for scan depends on the size of your drive and severity of errors.
