Creating partitions on your memory card (SD / USB) is easy, whether you’re using Windows or Mac. You just have to follow some steps that would allow you to partition your SD card.

Make a partition!

SD cards are small storage devices, used exclusively to store a collection of data that you can access from your computer or other devices. When using SD / SDHC cards or USB flash drives, it becomes very important to organize your important information. The best thing to do is to partition the memory card before using it to store your information.

Partitioning the memory card helps maintain the integrity of your data while using it in different devices. It will allow you to separate sensitive files as well as allow you to maintain backups. Partitioning the memory card can make the operation faster.

Prepare your system and make sure you have the SD / SDHC card slot on your computer or a USB card reader.

Memory card partition in Mac OS X

If your system has Mac OS X, do the following to create a partition on your memory card;

  • Insert the memory card into the designated slot on your computer

Or if you are using a card reader, connect the card reader to the USB port of your system.

  • Go to the “Application” folder and click on “Utilities”.
  • Find “Disk Utilities” inside, and click on it.
  • In the left sidebar, locate the name of your memory card and click on it. – You can see it at the top left of the Disk Utility tab.
  • In the disk utility of your memory card, click “Partition” – it can be found on the top side.
  • It will open the “Partition Layout”, go to the volume pull-down menu and set the number of partitions of the memory card.
  • Click on each partition – here you need to set the partition parameters such as partition name, partition size and partition format.
  • To complete the partitioning, click Apply and wait for the system to partition your memory card.

Note – If you want to use the SD / SD card for booting, before clicking “Apply”, go to “Options” and select “GUID Partition Table”.

Memory card partition in Windows 10, 8, 7, XP, Vista

If you are using a Windows system, partitioning the memory card can be done by following these steps;

  • Insert the memory card into a specific slot / Use the USB port if you are using a memory card reader.
  • Go to the control panel using Windows / Start button or the search option.
  • Go to system and security options.
  • Click on “Administrative Tools” in the window.
  • In the system and security, find and click on “Computer Management” in the displayed list.
  • Go to the left pane and expand the “Storage” option, it will show “Disk Management”.
  • Click Disk Management – This will display a list of all disks, their formats, and their status.
  • Right-click on your memory card, select the “New Simple Volume” option.
  • Run the “New Simple Volume Wizard” by clicking Next.
  • Select the size of your score in the highlighted text box and go to “Next”.
  • Give an identification letter to the reader and click “Next”.
  • Choose whether you want to format the disc or not and click “Next” – Formatting will allow you to change the file system, the volume label, etc.
  • Click “Finish” – this will finish partitioning your memory card.

Memory cards may vary in size, but can be viewed using an appropriate adapter or memory card reader. Partitioning can help you in many ways; this would avoid the loss of entire data on the map. So go ahead and make a partition on your memory card to avoid unnecessary loss of information.
