How to assign password to folders on Windows 7?

Windows 7 is among the best and most stable operating system designed by world popular Microsoft Corporation. It has many elegant features like touch support, handwriting, voice recognition etc which were absent in previous versions. Characteristics such as improved operating efficiency, more stable, virtual hard drive, faster boot load etc made Windows 7 the number one choice in both company and business field. However the only disadvantage in this OS is that, the files and folders stored on them are not 100% safe and secure. Like for example, you have a lot of important folders stored on your Windows 7 computer that you absolutely don’t want anyone to access. Perhaps you have multiple accounts on your Windows 7 computer, you are in a constant fear that other users might sneak into your account and access your folders. In such instances, it is necessary to protect the folders.

For all those who are lloking for best approach to protect their flders in Windows 7, here are few methods using which you can password protect folders in Windows 7.

Method 1: Change your user account to administrator

By changing your Windows 7 account to “Administrator”, you can create multiple accounts and block your important folders such that no other users except you can access the folders. And every time the blocked folder is accessed, it’ll ask for your administrator password. Therefore the folder will be locked unless you don’t remove the lock itself.

However what to do if you cannot change your account to administrator or don’t have the access to “control panel”! No problem just go through the other methods to password protect folders in Windows 7.

Method 2: Using built-in software

Windows 7 operating system provides an inbuilt compressing utility called Zip, using which you can assign password to folders. Follow the below procedure to get started.

Right click on the location where your important folders are present --> Choose New then click "WinZip File" --> This will create a new file with .zip extension --> Copy all your important Windows 7 folders into the new .zip file --> At last, open the Zip file click "File" then choose "Add a Password" option. Enter a desired password that you would like to assign and repeat the same to confirm it.

By using this method, you can assign password to your vital folders. However the only disadvantage with this method is that, sometimes the files and folders present in a Zip file becomes severely corrupt and damaged. After which no one (including you) can access the contents of the password assigned Zip file.

Method 3: Using third party utility

  5. From the next window select the folder which you want to lock and click on "Lock" button as shown in Figure 5.
  6. Within few minutes you will receive a success message that your folder is locked successfully as shown in Figure 6.
