Solution 1: Verify Disk Format Compatibility

Time Machine requires the backup disk to be formatted as APFS (macOS High Sierra or later, especially for SSDs) or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) for older macOS versions. It does not support FAT or NTFS file systems.

Check Format:

  • Open Finder > select the backup disk > File > Get Info to check the format.
  • If incompatible, back up any data on the drive, then reformat it:
Open Disk Utility (Finder > Applications > Utilities).
Select the backup disk, click Erase, and choose APFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
  • Reconfigure Time Machine to use the reformatted disk.

Caution: Reformatting erases all data, so ensure you have a backup of any important files.

Solution 2: Repair the Backup Disk

Disk errors can cause Error 109. Use Disk Utility to repair the backup disk:

  • Open Disk Utility (Finder > Applications > Utilities).
  • Select the backup disk from the left sidebar.
  • Click First Aid > Run to scan and repair disk errors.
  • If using a network drive like Time Capsule, locate the sparsebundle file, double-click it to mount it as a drive, and run First Aid on the mounted drive.

If repairs fail, consider erasing the disk and starting a new backup.

Solution 3: Reinstalling macOS with “Archive to Install”

  • Start the system by inserting Mac bootable flash drive or CD
  • You can see Install macOS. Click on this.
  • Continuously press C key on your keyboard
  • Accept the license agreement, select the desired language
  • Now select the destination drive which is having a problem. Usually, select Macintosh HD.
  • Now you have to select the installation method by clicking on Options icon
